There is a saying “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept” and I could no longer continue to walk past the homeless people begging for money on my short stroll from Central railway station to Torrens University in Surry Hills in Sydney, where I teach. I used to duck into the Woolies on the corner and buy a sandwich, apple and bottle of water and leave it with whoever happened to be asking for funds at the door to the supermarket that day, and I then I wondered how fruitful that was (sure it helped out that day, but homelessness and food scarcity are so much more complex than an occasional lunch).
It was then I found The Haymarket Foundation. The Haymarket Foundation is a local, secular, charitable organisation focused on people experiencing homelessness and other marginalised communities in Sydney. On their website they say the “Haymarket Foundation’s key strength is our work with people that many services just don’t have the capacity to support: those who have co-occurring mental illness, alcohol and other drug issues and frequently, lifelong trauma and disability”.
I would like to pledge that 10% of all funds I receive for the courses offered at Handcrafted Health, will be donated on your behalf to the Haymarket Foundation. So, you get the education and help those who truly need a hand up not just a handout!
